Consiliency, Curiosity, and the Future of Academic Excellence

I’ve had the privilege of attending brain waves conference at Columbia this past week, and I have learned A LOT about the field. Here is an idea that really resonated with me because of it’s applicability and versatility in any field.
We’re taught from a young age that learning happens in boxes. Math is in one box. Literature is in another. Science sits alone, history too, each with its own textbooks, teachers, and exams. The education system rewards you for mastering the box, for showing you can perform well within the lines. But what it rarely encourages is the act of connecting across boxes… of seeing how those seemingly unrelated fields actually speak to each other, and how, when brought together, they unlock something new.
This is where the idea of consiliency comes in.
If I were to define it, consiliency is the practice of weaving together multiple disciplines, even those that appear to have no relation on the surface, and discovering the unexpected truths, tools, and perspectives that emerge from that integration. It’s about tangential connections becoming transformative ones. And it’s not just about ideas. It’s also about people. When you bring in diverse perspectives (voices from different backgrounds, cultures, disciplines) you don’t dilute an idea. You strengthen it. You fortify it.
Why Consiliency Matters
The school system often teaches us to think in a single dimension: learn the facts, memorize the methods, pass the test. But the real world doesn’t operate in silos. Medicine, for instance, doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s shaped by politics, history, business, technology, anthropology, ethics, and many other disciplines. If we treat medicine as purely clinical, we lose the richness that these other disciplines bring.
Think about it: advances in patient care don’t only come from biochemistry or clinical trials. They come from bioengineering, from public policy shifts, from breakthroughs in biotechnology, and even from lessons embedded in history’s failures and successes. When we ignore these connections, we reduce medicine to mechanics rather than a living, evolving practice shaped by society.
The same applies to research. Relying solely on clinical data is like trying to map an ocean with a single drop of water. It’s not enough. True discovery happens when disciplines collide; that is, when technology informs biology, when engineering transforms medicine, when philosophy questions ethics in AI, and so on.
Academia’s Missed Opportunity
Academia, ironically, is one of the places where consiliency should thrive. Universities love to promote the idea of a “core curriculum,” of building “well-rounded” students. But in practice, most disciplines remain siloed. Yes, you might take an art class while majoring in chemistry, but how often are you actually encouraged to merge the two? To take the principles of color theory and apply them to chemical visualization? To let music inform mathematics, or sociology shape computer science? You get the point…
What happens instead is that students are forced to treat these classes as separate hoops to jump through. The connective tissue—the very essence of consiliency—is missing.
Here’s a thought experiment: what if we repurposed high school, public or private, for mastering the silos? Let students build a strong foundation in math, science, literature, and history at a faster pace. Then, when they enter college, flip the model entirely. Make it inquiry-driven. Require students to work across disciplines in meaningful ways: a capstone project required for graduation. A political science major must take engineering or something unrelated to their field. A computer scientist must explore anthropology or a related field. Not just as electives, but as part of the intellectual DNA of their education.
Because being “well-rounded” isn’t just about experiences; there’s a whole world of experiential-based learning. It’s about cultivating a mind that can cross-pollinate ideas, that sees the beauty in weaving together disparate threads into a new fabric of understanding.
The Human Side of Consiliency
It’s easy to talk about consiliency in abstract terms, but at its core, it’s about curiosity. The kind of curiosity that refuses to stop at the edges of one discipline and instead asks: What happens if I bring this into conversation with something else?
And this is where it becomes deeply human. Because we are not siloed beings. Our lives are already interdisciplinary. The way we solve problems, the way we raise families, the way we navigate careers—none of it fits neatly into a single category. So why should our approach to learning be any different?
When we practice consiliency, we not only push the boundaries of our own understanding, we invite others along. We create communities of inquiry where ideas are tested, challenged, and reshaped by diverse voices. That’s what makes them stronger. That’s what makes them revolutionary.
A Call to Rethink Academic Excellence
If we want to redefine academic excellence, it can’t just be about who scores highest on standardized tests or publishes the most papers. True excellence comes from consiliency: the courage to cross boundaries, the humility to learn from other disciplines, and the curiosity to see connections where none seem obvious.
The irony is that this isn’t some utopian dream. It’s the way progress has always happened. The great breakthroughs—whether in science, art, philosophy, or technology—didn’t emerge from people who stayed in their lanes. They came from those who dared to wander, to merge, to question.
Maybe the real question isn’t can academia embrace consiliency, but will it?
Because if it doesn’t, the world outside will. And those who learn to live and think across disciplines will be the ones shaping the future. And typically these individuals are called disruptors. Will you be the one to disrupt your field?
